Preparing for your surgery

Scheduling

Our preoperative nurse will call you before your surgery to review your medical history and provide pre-operative instructions. If your doctor ordered labs or testing to be done at TSH, the nurse will schedule this for you.

  • Gather all of your prescribed and over the counter medications to review them with the Nurse during this call.
  • Be ready to discuss any known allergies

Before Surgery

  • Discuss medications with your surgeon, PCP, or specialist prior to surgery. See medications section below.
  • Prepare ahead by making plans for rides, filling prescriptions, meals, child care, or other issues during recovery.
  • Notify Texas Surgical Hospital if you develop any health changes, illness, or fever.

The Night Before Surgery

  • Food after 10:00PM. This includes gum and mints. May have clear liquids up until midnight. Clear liquids examples: Water, Gatorade, apple juice, tea, soda, and coffee with no cream.
  • Do not consume any alcohol for at least 24 hours before your procedure.
  • Do not smoke for at least 12 hours before your procedure.
  • Take a shower using anti-bacterial soap

The Day of Your Surgery

  • You may brush your teeth in the morning however you must not swallow.
  • Wear glasses instead of contacts. Bring a glasses case since these cannot be worn in the OR.
  • Do NOT wear any lotion, deodorant, perfume, or makeup.
  • You may need to provide a urine sample if you are a woman of child bearing age per anesthesia policy.
  • You must have a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing and flat shoes. Be aware that you may have mobility issues or a brace/sling in place after surgery.
  • If you are required to take medications on the day of surgery, take your pill with a small sip of water. See medication section below.

If you are staying overnight:

  • If you have sleep apnea and utilize a CPAP machine, please bring it with you.
  • All of our suites are private and equipped with Wi-Fi, cable TV and can accommodate up to 2 visitors.
  • Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Medications:

  • Anti-inflammatory, Anti-Coagulants, Anti-Platelet, Blood Thinning medications or herbal supplements: Stop taking these 7 Days Prior to surgery. Below is a list of the most common drugs that increase bleeding.

  • Weight Management Medications: Stop taking Phentermine and Contrave (Naltrexone/Buproprion) 14 days Prior to surgery.’
  • Blood pressure Medications: Take your Beta Blockers as scheduled. Do not take Ace Inhibitors and Angiotensin Receptor Blockers on day of surgery.

  • Diabetic Medications: If taking oral hypoglycemics, please hold the morning dose on the day of your procedure. If taking Insulin routinely, please take only half of your usual morning dose.

Parking and Main Entrance:

Parking and main entrance are located at the front of the building that faces Marsh Lane. Park and then enter through the double doors under the awning and check in at reception.
